South Sudan - Thorn Tree Forum - Lonely Planet
I am just back from Sudan. Entered through Wadi Halfa and then travelled on top of a truck to Dongola. Very nice. I could even lay horizontal at night and sleep, while the truck slowly moved on through soft sand. From Dongola I took a nromal bus to kahrtoum, then on to Meroe, Port Sudan and Kassala.
I alos visited the south. No problem. No permit needed, although I got one (with the help of the wonderfull Midhat - who's well known on this forum) . I took the plane from Khartoum to Juba and then took a bus north to Bor. From Juba you can travel overland to Uganda or Kenia. It also should be possible to go by bus from Juba to Wau, and then on to El Obeid and Khartoum, or in the other direction. But I did not try this myself.
The ferry from Aswan to Wadi Halfa is very crowded at the moment. I luckily could get a ticket in Aswan, but others I met had to wait a whole week because the boat was full. So you better make a reservation in advance.
