Khwarezm

Khwarezm was the center of the Khwarezmian civilization and a series of kingdoms, whose capitals were Kath, Gurganj and, from the 16th century on, Khiva. Today Khwarezm belongs partly to Uzbekistan and partly to Turkmenistan.
Konye-Urgench (Old Urgench) is a municipality of about 30,000 inhabitants in north-eastern Turkmenistan. It is the site of the ancient town of Urgench, which contains the unexcavated ruins of the 12th-century capital of Khwarezm. The ruins of Old Urgench is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
